Course Overview

The Elementary First Aid (EFA) course is designed to provide seafarers with the essential knowledge and practical skills to perform effective first aid on board a vessel. This course covers the basic principles of first aid and life-saving techniques in the event of an accident or medical emergency at sea.

Approved under STCW Regulation VI/1 and Section A-VI/1-3 of the STCW Code (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), this training forms part of the mandatory basic safety training for all seafarers.

Participants will learn how to respond confidently to medical emergencies, apply immediate first aid measures, and assist in maintaining the health and safety of all personnel onboard.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the basic principles of first aid and immediate response.
Assess and manage casualties effectively in various emergency situations.
Administer CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and control bleeding.
Recognize and treat common injuries, burns, fractures, and shock
Maintain personal hygiene and prevent infection during first aid procedures.
Assist in casualty transport and ensure safety during medical emergencies.

Scene Assessment and Safety Precautions
Patient Assessment and Basic Life Support (BLS)
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Techniques
Management of Bleeding, Wounds, and Burns
Fractures, Sprains, and Shock Management
Bandaging and Immobilization Techniques
Hygiene and Infection Control in First Aid
Transportation of the Injured
Certification & Validity

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an STCW-compliant Certificate of Elementary First Aid (EFA) – Course ID: 6142

Validity:
The EFA Certificate does not have an expiry date and is valid for life (Unlimited).
As per DG Shipping (India) and IMO regulations, there is no requirement for a refresher or revalidation course for EFA.
However, some foreign flag administrations may require a revalidation every 5 years as part of their own flag documentation policy. Seafarers are advised to check with the respective flag state or company if sailing under a different registry.

This course is mandatory for all seafarers prior to joining any sea-going vessel, as per STCW requirements. It is ideal for:

New entrants to the maritime industry
Cadets and ratings
Ship crew renewing their STCW certification

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the course and assessments will be awarded an STCW-compliant Certificate of Proficiency in Elementary First Aid (EFA) – Course ID 6142.
